Garage destroyed, houses damaged in fire Saturday

MANISTIQUE – Fire destroyed a garage and damaged a neighboring house Saturday in Manistique, according to law enforcement officials. A lawn mower is believed to have ignited the blaze.

At 10:37 p.m., officers from the Manistique Public Safety Department responded to reports of a garage fire at 512 N. Mackinac Ave.

Upon arriving at the scene, officers found the garage fully engulfed. Fire personnel worked for approximately 30 minutes before containing the blaze, and remained at the scene for three hours.

After a short investigation, officers discovered the garage owner had placed a lawn mower in the garage approximately 20 minutes prior to the fire, possibly contributing to its ignition.

The garage was deemed a total loss. The garage owner’s house and a neighbor’s home were also damaged by the blaze. No injuries as were reported.

Assisting at the scene was the Hiawatha Fire Department, Sault Tribal Police and the Michigan State Police.
