He was born April 12, 1925, in Cooks, Mich., the son of Dominic and Merilda (DeMars) Popour and attended school in Cooks.
On Sept. 15, 1956, he married Elizabeth Gardner-Ranta in Manistique and they made their home at Stevens Lake for 27 years, before moving to Manistique in 1994. Elizabeth preceded him in death on Jan. 11, 2004.
Ray was employed as a sailor on the Great Lakes, for the Schoolcraft County Road Commission, on road construction and as a woods-worker.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, gardening and helping others. He also enjoyed listening to music, playing cards and playing with his dog, Sam. Ray was able to actively participate in the activities at the Heritage House and at Schoolcraft Medical Care Facility.
Babe is survived by his daughters, Carole (Anil) Kulkarni of Troy, Mich., and Roberta (Donald) Erickson of Manistique; grandsons, Nicholas and Michael Kulkarni of Troy, and Patrick Erickson of Manistique; one greatgrandchild; brother, Vern “Bun” Popour of Gwinn, Mich.; sister, Alta Peterson of Manistique; along with several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Wilfred, Richard, and Floyd Popour; and sisters, Lila Des- Jardin, Velida Vanderville, Verma Rochefort and Lorna Rochefort.
Visitation will be held from 1-3 p.m., Tuesday, July 30, at Messier- Broullire Funeral Home in Manistique. The funeral service will follow at 3 p.m., at the funeral home, with Reverend Jay Martin officiating.
Burial is at Fairview Cemetery.
