John F. Chartier

MANISTIQUE – John F. Chartier, 45, of 1845S Flodin Road, Manistique (Thompson), Mich., died unexpectedly on Saturday, July 13, 2013, at Marquette General Hospital in Marquette, Mich.

He was born Sept. 25, 1967, in Grayling, Mich. He moved to the Thompson area as a child and attended Manistique area schools. At the age of 14, he sustained a spinal cord injury which resulted in him becoming quadriplegic.

He obtained his G.E.D. and furthered his education online and at Northern Michigan University.

John was employed at Data Stat telephone surveys in Ann Arbor, as a bookkeeper while living in Marquette, and was lastly self-employed as a gift sales marketer. He had moved back to Thompson in 1999.

He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and fishing, snowmobiling and 4-wheeling, mowing the lawn and gardening. He also enjoyed car races and mud drags.

John is survived by his mother, Jean (Sheehy) Petersen of Thompson; brother, Scott (Jen) Chartier of Manistique; nieces and nephews, Trevor, Levi, Samantha, Jacob and Michael; brother-in-law, Kevin Schnurer; aunt, Jennie Andrews; uncle, Michael Sheehy; several cousins; and close friends, Greg and Bill.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Michele Schnurer; grandparents, Reginald and Alma Sheehy; and uncle, Mark Sheehy.

A graveside service was held at 3:30 p.m., Monday, July 15, at Thompson Township Cemetery in Thompson, with Mr. Gary Middlemiss officiating.
