Pictured Rocks cruise day a hit

MUNISING – The second annual “Pictured Rocks/Yooper Ride Free” day was once again a success. Pictured Rocks Cruises of Munising estimated around 700 more residents participated this year – a total of 1,679 “Yoopers”.

The cruises offered 15 trips throughout the day, and accommodated people from 74 Upper Peninsula Communities.

“This was the first year that the Alger County Chamber did activities at Bayshore Park,” said Kathy Reynolds, director of the Alger County Chamber of Commerce. “We were extremely happy with the turnout and look forward to this event growing in the coming years.”

An estimated 5,000 visitors participated in the Bayshore Park festivities.

“This is an outstanding example of a company giving back to their community by providing a free national park experience for the residents of the Upper Peninsula,” said Tim Good, acting superintendent of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. “I sincerely hope that this becomes an annual event.”

Pictured Rocks Cruises, Inc. manager, John Madigan, said he hopes to offer the free cruises next year on June 14 to celebrate Pictured Rocks Day.
