MAS passes budget
MANISTIQUE – Manistique Area Schools will be working with slightly less in the next fiscal year. The MAS Board of Education approved the 2013-14 budget during Monday’s meeting. According to Superintendent Kathy McDonough, the district will have approximately $8,064,827 in revenue and $8,690,977 worth of expenses in 2013-14. This will leave a deficit of approximately $626,000 to be pulled from the district’s fund balance. “At the end of 2013-14, with the current budget overspending that is in here, we should have a projected year-end fund balance of $323,849, which is in keeping with the board’s (requested) minimum of $300,000 as a fund equity minimum,” McDonough explained.
In 2012-13 the district had $8,390,819 in revenue and $8,758,866 in expenses, leaving $368,047 to be pulled from the school’s then fund balance of $1,123,628.
The school had originally estimated the deficit in 2012-13 to be $545,346, but were spared in some areas of the budget. “We had an increase in revenue of $40,494 in various areas … then we had the decrease in expenditures from, again, the retirement,” she said. “We had a total improvement to fund equity of $177,299.” That improvement left the district with a fund balance of $950,000 to begin the school year.
In other business, the board also previewed commercials to air on local TV stations once approved. The commercials were filmed earlier this year at both the middle/high school and Emerald Elementary. They are aimed at boosting enrollment in the district.
