Donald R. Smith

MANISTIQUE – Donald R. Smith, 79, of 872S State Highway M-149, Manistique (Thompson), Mich., died Tuesday, June 11, 2013, at the Northern Comfort Specialized Care Home in Manistique.

He was born Feb. 18, 1934, in Thompson, Mich., the son of Thomas and Barbara (Krusic) Smith, Sr. He was a graduate of St. Francis de Sales School and Manistique High School.

On April 18, 1959, he married the former Roberta J. Nelson in Manistique. They made their home and raised their family in Thompson.

Don was employed by the Michigan D.N.R in his younger years and later worked in the pulp mill at Manistique Papers, Inc., for several years, retiring from there.

He was a member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church of Manistique where he served as an usher for over 20 years.

He was a charter officer of the Manistique Federal Credit Union loan committee and was a co-founder of the Happy Wanderer’s R.V. Club of Manistique. He enjoyed camping, playing cards and spending time with his grandchildren.

Don is survived by his wife, Roberta

Smith of Manistique; daughter, Debra (Lee) Vaughn of Manistique; sons, Thomas (Ellen) Smith of Mason, Ohio, and Michael (Lisa) Smith of Metamora, Mich.; grandchildren, Leanne, Greg, Alex, Caitlin and Tara; sisters, Vivian Smith of Manistique and L. Faye (Merrill) Archey of Manistique; along with several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Ernest, Amos, Thomas, Marvin and Bernard Smith; and sisters, Barbara Cook and June Gosnell.

Visitation was held from 10-11 a.m., Friday, June 14, at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Manistique.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 11 a.m., at the church, with Father Glenn Theoret officiating. Burial followed in Thompson Township Cemetery.
