Young Emerald girls finish third

Boy’s team takes sixth at U.P. Finals

NORWAY – The Lady Emerald golf team wrapped up the 2013 season with a third place finish at the U.P. Golf Finals in Norway last week. Iron Mountain won the tournament with a team score of 421, Ironwood came in second with a score of 458 followed by Manistique with 466, Norway at 502 and Stephenson with 556.

The Emeralds were led by freshman Rachel Ryan. Ryan finished in ninth place with a card of 111. Hailey Hoholik shot 116, Abby Milavec 116, and Ashley Menominee 124

“It was an exciting year for the girl’s golf team,” Coach Deb Taylor said. “We are very young (three freshmen, one sophomore and one junior). The girls continued to improve throughout the year despite the late start, and I am looking for great things from them in the future.”

Hancock won the boy’s division with a team score 324. Host Norway came in second just one stroke off the pace, Iron Mountain 330, L’Anse 349, West Iron County 349, Manistique 374, Ironwood 397, Ishpeming 408.

Freshman Alex Anderson led the boys with a low card of 90. Zack Powers turned in a 91, D.K. Boyd 96, Tanner Watson 97.

“We were competitive all year, but struggled to get things going early today,” Taylor said. “Just like the girls, we will have several returning next year and I look forward to working with them. Between the boys and the girls, they are a great bunch of kids.”
