Effie V. Nelson
She was born Feb. 2, 1915, in Deerton, Mich., the daughter of John and Matilda (Knuttila) Lustila. Her family moved to Germfask, Mich., when Effie was seven years old. She attended school in Germfask and also high school in Manistique, Mich.
Effie worked at Blaney Park Resort until her marriage to Norman V. Nelson of Seney on Oct. 4, 1934. She and Norman “Nie”, made their home in Seney, raising two children, Norma and Norman.
During World War II, Effie was a member of the Women’s Club in Seney. The ladies would meet at each other’s homes and sew and knit for the soldiers overseas. She was also a 4-H leader for many years, teaching sewing and knitting. Effie was an avid gardener and always had a beautiful garden of flowers. She also loved doing crafts and ceramics.
She was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church of Germfask and the Lutheran Ladies Aide. She was well known for her knitting of baby booties and mittens for the church sales and all of the babies born in the community.
Effie is survived by her loving children, Norma (Kenneth) Mc- Donald of Port Charlotte, Fla., and Norman (Carol) Nelson of Kalamazoo, Mich. She was also blessed with five grandchildren, Paula, Pam, Cindy, Bruce and Debbie; 11 great- grandchildren, John, Melanie, David, Jennifer, Brian, Steven, Sydney, Johanna, Andrea, Chad, and Brandt; 10 great-greatgrandchildren, Andrew, Jacob, Tyler, McKenna, Payton, Kaeleigh, Gabriella, Madeline, Ethan, and Roman; 10 God children, Vicki, Beverly, Bobby, Barbara, Sonny, Janice, Susan, Robert, John, and Rudy. She is also survived by her sisters, Evelyn Thompson and Catherine Nickerson; and her brother, Gerald Lustila.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Matilda; her loving husband, Norman in 1990; brothers, Rudy, John, Harold, and Robert; sisters, Ida, Ellen, Tyne, Ann, Edna, and Irene; great-grandson, Brian Kennedy; and daughterin law, Barbara Nelson.
Visitation will be held from 10- 11 a.m., June 7, at Grace Lutheran Church in Germfask. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m., Friday at the church with Pastor Arthur Bode officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery at Germfask.
