Bernice G. Ekdahl Bernice G. Ekdahl MANISTIQUE – Bernice G. Ekdahl, 99, of Shunk Road, Manistique, Mich., passed away on Wednesday, May 22, 2013, at Schoolcraft Medical Care Facility in Manistique.

She was born Feb. 9, 1914, in Blaney Park, Mich., the daughter Paul and Gladys (Goudreau) Hubbard and was a graduate of Manistique High School.

In 1932 the former Bernice G. Hubbard married Harvey E. Ekdahl in Manistique. He preceded her in death in September of 1976.

Bernice is fondly remembered by many for having managed Harvey’s Grocery Store at the corner of Manistique Avenue and Cattaragus Street in Manistique for 25 years. She did this while raising her children and grandchildren as the need arose.

When she and her husband Harvey (Sr.) retired, they sold the store and accompanying house, and built a home at Seul Choix Point in Gulliver, Mich., and lived there until Harvey’s death. She later cared for her mother, Gladys Hubbard until her death at the age of 94.

Over the years, Bernice enjoyed music, signing, playing the piano, artistry, knitting and crocheting afghans.

She was a member of St. Francis de Sales

Church in Manistique.

Bernice is survived by her children, Lawrence Ekdahl of Merrill, Wis., Francis

Ekdahl of Mesa, Ariz.,

William Ekdahl of

Albuquerque, N.M.,

Linda House of Orlando, Fla., and Harvey Ekdahl, Jr. of Manistique; along with numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and greatgreat grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by an infant child, and her sister, Agnes Hubbard.

Visitation was held from 5-7 p.m., May 24, at Messier-Broullire Funeral Home in Manistique with a prayer service held at 7 p.m.

A mass of Christian burial was celebrated at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, May 25, at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Manistique with Father Glenn Theoret officiating.

Burial will be held on Friday, May 31, in the Fairview Cemetery at Manistique.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to St. Francis de Sales School.
