Area Girl Scouts plan 2013 summer camp

Celebrated along with ‘Summer Fun Days’

MANISTIQUE – The Manistique Area Girl Scouts will celebrate “Summer Fun Days” with the “Girls Can Do Anything” camp experience June 7-21. Girls ages 5-18 may take part in the camp, which is held Monday through Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Indian Lake State Park.

An overnight stay for girls in Units 5 and 6 will be held Thursday night. Friday’s camp session will begin at 8:30 a.m. and end at noon with a closing ceremony that parents are welcome to attend.

“This year’s camp session will carry on the traditions that were set by founder, Juliette Gordon Low. Juliette, or Daisy as she was so affectionately called by her uncle, was very passionate about getting girls into the outdoors,” said Jill Johnson, community development manager for the Girl Scouts of the Northwestern Great Lakes.

Girls will experience fire building, outdoor cooking, knife and water safety and more. Older girls will explore hiking, biking and kayaking around the area.

The camp program is offered to all girls, regardless of their connection with a troop. All girls must be registered Girl Scouts to attend. The annual national membership fee is $12. The cost for the week-long program is $35 and will include a commemorative t-shirt. For more information, or to register girls for the program, contact Johnson at (888) 747- 6945 or jjohnson@gsnwgl.org.
