BATON ROUGE, La. – Former Manistique Emerald golf standout Mike Nagy, a member of the Tennessee Volunteers men’s golf team, and his teammates secured a fourth place finish at the NCAA Men’s Golf Regional’s in Baton Rouge, La., recently. The comefrom behind finish earned the Vols a berth in the NCAA Division I Championship.
With only five slots to fill, the Vols began the day Saturday in seventh place, but the team was able to rally late to secure a trip to the championship.
Leading the Vols in the final round was freshman Oliver Goss. Goss finished even on the course in the final round with a 73-73-70-
216, which included 11- birdies, an effort which earned the All-SEC First-Teamer a fifth place finish in the tournament.
In addition to Nagy, the Vols were represented by seniors Rick Lamb and Jay Vandeventer. Vandeventer posted rounds of 75- 76-73--224 (+8) and Lamb 76-78-71--225 (+9). Thomas Dunne finished with 81-77- 81- 239 (+23)
Nagy a freshman tied for 37th place after carding a 76-79-74--229 (+13).
Alabama won the tournament followed by Florida, LSU, Tennessee and Coastal Carolina.
The finals will take place in Atlanta at Capital City Club. Format for the tournament will be three rounds of stroke play May 28-30 (18 holes each day), with the top eight advancing to the match play championship May 31-June 2.
