MLB Pitch, Hit and Run Competition planned

MANISTIQUE – CUP Baseball will host a free Major League Baseball Competition for area youth at noon on May 19 at the Denton Nelson Field located on Fifth Street.

“Pitch, Hit and Run” is the official competition of Major League Baseball.

The program is designed to provide children with an opportunity to compete, free of charge, in a competition that recognizes individual excellence in core baseball/ softball skills.

Boys and girls are divided into four divisions: 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14, and have the chance to advance through four levels of competition, including team championships at major league ballparks and the national finals at the 2013 MLB All-Star Game.

The individual pitching, hitting and running champions, along with the all-around champion in each age and gender group at the local competition will be awarded and advance to the sectional level of competition.

All participants must bring a copy of their birth certificate and have a parent or guardian fill out a registration/waiver form prior to the start of competition.

2013 MHSAA District Softball Tournament Set

GLADSTONE – Manistique Emeralds girls’ softball team will travel to Gladstone to take part in the 2013 Michigan High School Athletic Association District l tournament on May 28.

Tournament play gets underway at 4 p.m. at Braves Park in Gladstone.

Tournament play will conclude on June 1, with the championship game scheduled to be played at noon.

Teams participating in this year’s tournament include; Gladstone, Gwinn, Houghton, Negaunee, Pickford, Westwood and Manistique.

Admission is $5 and concessions will be available.

CUP plans opening day ceremonies May 18

MANISTIQUE – CUP Baseball will open its eighth season at the Denton Nelson Field on Fifth Street on May 18. Activities will start at 8:30 a.m., with a T-ball game between Night Life Karaoke and Dairy Kream.

T-ball play will continue throughout the morning with Linda’s Bread Box vs. Main Street Pizza at 9:15 a.m.; Peterson Brothers Fisheries vs. Zephyr at 10 a.m.; and mBank vs. Design on a Tee at 10:45 a.m.

At 11:30 a.m., there will be the first 2013 Minor League clash between Germfask Haunted Acres and Online Engineering.

Official opening ceremonies will begin at 1 p.m. with a presentation of colors by the V.F.W. Color Guard. The ceremonies will also include a tribute to service personnel in observance of Armed Forces Day; the signing of the new charter with Cal Ripken Baseball; and a special presentation in honor of Tom Jenerou, a longtime coach.

The first pitch will be thrown by Mark Watkins, regional commissioner of Cal Ripken Baseball, and Cindy Jenerou.

Play will resume after the ceremonies with a Minor League battle between Linda’s Bread Box and Graymount Western Lime That game will be followed by Garden playing Goudreau Trucking.

The night cap games will include Major League foes, U.P. Tire vs. Bowman Gas and Oil, followed by Garden vs. Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital.
