Second grade students at Emerald Elementary recently planted pumpkins, flowers, and beans for their Science Unit. Helping students plant was Mrs. Schoenow. The “Alphabet Countdown” continued with the letter “F” for favorite book. Kylee Reinke brought her favorite book, “America the Beautiful”, with a great pop-up of the Statue of Liberty.

No school on Monday, May 27 in recognition of Memorial Day.

Parents are reminded of the early dismissal (1:20 p.m.) on June 3 and June 4. Students at Emerald Elementary will receive the final Emerald Bulletin, which will highlight resources and activities for you and your child to take part in over the summer. Your child will also receive an Emerald Playbook and Math Summer Activity Packet. Encourage your child to read every day throughout the summer. Reading is the No. 1 activity to keep your child’s mind academically in shape! Make it a fun and enjoyable activity, and don’t forget to visit the Manistique School and Public Library.

Events taking place at Emerald as the school year comes to a close: May 22-24 fifth grade Science Camp; May 22 Volunteer Breakfast beginning at 8 a.m.; May 28 fifth grade field trip to Mackinac Island; May 29 fourth grade field trip to Fort Michilimackinac; May 30 third grade field trip to Seney Wildlife Refuge and second grade trip to the Children’s Museum in Marquette; and May 31 kindergarten and first grade field trip to Wallace Zoo.

Jack Reque Alternative Education Center will celebrate its 13th graduation at 2 p.m. at the Hiawatha Community Center on May 17.

Girls’ softball will host the “Pink Tournament” beginning at 10 a.m. this Saturday, May 18.

Learn to salsa dance on May 21. The Spanish Club will be holding a fundraiser in the MS/HS cafeteria. The cost is $5 for students, $4 for pre-sale student, $7 for adult, and $5 for pre-sale adult. A snack will be provided.

Physicals for next school year: sign-up now in the high school office. The $5 must be paid at sign-up. Physicals will be at the Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital Rural Health Clinic on May 21.

Sign-up now is now in the high school office for glee club, as well as varsity and JV football next year.

LEGO Robotics Day Camp registration has begun in the high school office. Session 1 runs from 9 a.m. to noon on Aug.19. Session 2 runs from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Aug. 22.

ATV/ORV Safety Class: Sign-up in the high school office and pick up an information sheet. The ride date will be June 8 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. to the Thunder Bowl Scramble Area.

Manistique High School Graduation takes place at 7:30 p.m. in the Bonifas Gymnasium on May 24. Commencement speaker is 1980 MAS graduate, retired Marine Corps Col., Thomas Beckman.

May 20: Golf at home with Escanaba and Munising (4 p.m.) monthly school board meeting in the Community Room beginning at 6:30 p.m.

May 22: High school volleyball open gym at 6 p.m.

May 28: Golf at home with Newberry and Gladstone 4 p.m.
