Broullire to receive UPS Hall of Fame Scholarship
MANISTIQUE – Four graduating Upper Peninsula seniors will be presented with scholarships from the Upper Peninsula Sports Hall of Fame at the annual Induction Banquet on May 11, at the Island Resort and Casino. The scholarships will be presented by David Lahtinen, chairman of the 15-person scholarship committee of the U.P. Sports Hall of Fame.
Each scholarship is worth $500 per year for four years.
To be eligible, a senior must have had a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 and a minimum of four varsity letters in two varsity sports. In addition, each applicant was required to submit an essay.
This year’s recipients include senior Kenner Broullire. Broullire has a GPA of 4.16 and is senior class president. He has eight varsity letters in track, football and basketball. He also holds the U.P. all-time record in the 300-meter hurdles and has been all-conference and all-U.P. in football for the past two years. He has served on various youth groups and attended a National Youth Gathering in New Orleans.
Broullire will attend the U.S. Military Academy at West Point majoring in business and economics. The nomination further stated his teachers and coaches have said he is very active in volunteering and a compassionate and hard working student/athlete.
In his essay, he stated that at the U.S. Military Academy he will “be an example” and will respectfully represent the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

Sarah Cullip – St. Ignace-LaSalle
Cullip has a GPA of 4.0 at St. Ignace High School. She has 12 varsity letters in cross country, basketball and track. She has played varsity basketball at St. Ignace for the past four years and led the Saints to the state championship this past season.
She will attend Grand Valley State University Honors College and major in modern languages.
Tara Kilunen – Calumet
Kilunen has a 4.03 GPA and is salutatorian at Calumet High School. She has seven varsity letters in cross country and track. She has been U.P. runner of the year, on the U.P. Dream Team, and all-state for four years. She holds school records in the 3,200-meter run, the 800-meter run, and the 3,200-meter relay at Calumet High School and the U.P. Final record in cross country. She has won the U.P. Division I cross country championship all four years in high school.
Kilunen is will attend either Michigan Technological University or Northern Michigan University.
Ross Michaels – Chassell
Michaels has a GPA of 4.0 and is the valedictorian at Chassell High School. He has 12 varsity letters in football, hockey and track at three different high schools (Hancock, Jeffers and Chassell). He has been all-conference in football and hockey and is the high school pole vault record holder. He will attend Michigan Tech and major in biomedical engineering.
