Shirley J. Gehrett

NEWBERRY – Shirley J. “Shirl” Gehrett, 63, born Aug. 31, 1949, left this earth for eternal life on Friday, April 26, 2013.

Shirl, as she was fondly known, spent many years in retail sales. She owned and operated “Shirl’s Down Under” Shirt Shop in Ludington before relocating to Dallas, Texas. She continued working in retail sales until her “semi-retirement’ when she moved back home to spend precious time with her ailing mother. While in Curtis, Mich., she was manager of Ken’s Auto Sales in Curtis. Shirl loved scrapbooking, reading and collecting antique dolls and her passion was spending time with emerging readers at Three Lakes Academy in Curtis. She had a loving and generous heart and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Shirl was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Melissa Sue Whiskin; and her parents, Kenneth and Ruby Gehrett.

Survivors include her children, Michelle (Lance) Byrns of Cyprus, Texas, Lisa Whiskin of Arlington, Texas, Deborah Whiskin (Bernard), of Arlington, and David (Mindy) Whiskin, of Keller, Texas; grandchildren, Chris Whiskin, Alexis Whiskin, Derek Whiskin, Ashley Leonard, Tyler Whiskin, Brooke Whiskin, Cameron Whiskin, Curtis Byrns, Courtney Byrns, Colton Whiskin, and Jakub Whiskin; nieces and nephews, Heather Pann, John Pann, Tanya Haas, Melissa Streeter, Jerry Jack, Jr. and Jason Jack; siblings, Donald Gehrett, Susan (Tom) Pann and Sally (Jerry) Jack; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins along with good friends, DiAnne Bostick and Larry Downing.

A graveside service will be planned for July and will be announced in the news media at a later date.
