MHS spring sports open on Thursday with softball

MANISTIQUE – An update of the Manistique Emerald spring sports schedule was recently released by Manistique High School Athletic Director Rob Ryan.

High school golf: The first five matches of the year have been postponed or cancelled. The only one with a make-up date is the April 23 match at Norway. That match was originally just a boys’ meet, but will now be a co-ed meet. It is scheduled to be held in Norway on May 15, with a 10 a.m. start time.

The next two matches on the schedule are April 29 and April 30 at home (Indian Lake Golf Course). The course is not currently open, and it is not known if it will be open when those dates arrive.

An additional golf change involves the date of the U.P. Finals. Originally scheduled for May 31, the date has been changed to May 29. They will be held at Oak Crest Golf Club in Norway.

High School Track: Manistique will be hosting the Kiwanis track meet at AF Hall Stadium on April 26 beginning at 4 p.m.

High school softball: The past 12 games have been cancelled, and will not be rescheduled. Due to anticipated favorable conditions on Friday, Manistique will host home softball games against Negaunee on April 26, rather than April 25. The doubleheader is set to begin at 4 p.m..

An addition to the existing schedule is a doubleheader at Ishpeming on May 23, beginning at 4 p.m.

War Memorial Nurses’ Community 5K on May 5

SAULT STE. MARIE – War Memorial Nurses Association and the Michigan Nurses Association are hosting their second annual charity race: “Expanding for the Long Run” – a 5K Run/Walk on May 4. The nurses are donating proceeds from the family-friendly event to a new WMH Emergency Department.

The race starts at 9 a.m. with registration taking place from 7:30 -8:30 a.m.

The route which is a moderate level 5k one-loop course that starts and finishes on the corner of Nolte and Pine Streets. The finish line will have separate chutes for runners and walkers.

Overall fastest man, fastest woman and top walker will receive plaques. Medals will be awarded.

Entry fees are $20 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under if pre-registered by April 27. From April 28 to race day, the fee is $25 for adults and $10 for children 12 and under. The first 100 participants to pre-register will receive a race t-shirt at registration.

Pre-registration is available online at Active.com under event title “Expanding for the Long Run” or through searching local race events near Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.
