The build is a collaboration with Lowe’s, which provides grant money to renovate or repair an existing home.

This year’s project, for a small family with two young children, is located in Manistique. The event will begin at 9 a.m. and finish at 4 p.m. Lunch will be provided.

According to the Habitat officials, the project is designed to empower families and in particular to empower women and teach home maintenance and construction skills. The workforce that day is required to be 70 percent women.

Since the Habitat HiawathaLand affiliate serves five counties, including Schoolcraft, Delta, Alger, Luce, and West Mackinac, there will be volunteers from all over the U.P. contributing to the project.

Work to be performed on the home includes: roof replacement, siding repair, replacement of all windows and doors, painting, installation of additional insulation, and landscaping. There will be multiple crews working simultaneously in different areas throughout and around the home. Multiple supervisors will be onsite that day to instruct and guide each team of volunteers.

To participate in this or any other Habitat event, contact the Habitat office at (906) 341-7437. Since lunch is provided, an accurate count of attendees is needed in advance.
