2 will face torture charge
ESCANABA – Two Escanaba residents are facing torture and two other charges relating to a 15-year-old boy allegedly held against his will in their apartment.
According to the Escanaba Public Safety Department, 46-year-old Susan Bardo, the boy’s mother, and 47-year-old Carl Pellinen, Bardo’s boyfriend, were arrested following a welfare check regarding the boy at their residence at the 1500 block of North 20th Street.
Officers were able to make contact with Bardo and Pellinen at the residence, and upon inquiring about the welfare of the boy, found him in an approximately 8-by-10 foot tarp-lined room upstairs.
The boy was subsequently brought to the public safety department, where he was interviewed about his living conditions. Following the interview, the boy was transferred to OSF St. Francis Hospital for medical evaluation.
Bardo and Pellinen were also brought in and interviewed at public safety while search warrants were executed at the residence. Upon completion of the interviews and evidence produced by the execution of the search warrants, the pair was arrested.
The two were officially charged in 94th District Court today on three charges, including: one count of child abuse, first degree; one count of criminal sexual conduct, first degree; and one count of torture.
Both remain lodged in the Delta County Jail, each with a $50,000 cash bond. They will appear for a preliminary hearing on April 25 in Delta County District Court.
