Catholic Women’s Conference set for April 27

MARQUETTE – The Catholic Diocese of Marquette and the Upper Peninsula Knight of Columbus presents the 2013 Catholic Women’s Conference on April 27. The conference theme is “Women of the New Evangelization” and will run from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. at St. Peter Cathedral in Marquette.

Guest speakers include Teresa Tomeo and Msgr. Ron Browne. Tomeo is an author, syndicated talk show host, and motivational speaker addressing media awareness and activism. She has been featured on The O’Reilly Factor, Fox News, Fox and Friends, MSNBC and the Dr. Laura Show.

Monsignor Ronald T. Browne has been serving as moderator of the curia for the Diocese of Marquette since 2009. He had served as Judicial Vicar of the Archdiocese of Detroit’s Metropolitan Tribunal, and on the Archdiocesan Presbyteral Council and the Priest Assignment Board.

Tickets are $30 per person in advance through April 24 or $35 at the door. Although this event is a Catholic Women’s Conference, it is open to women of all faiths. For more information and registration, contact Chuck Crotty at (906) 226- 3460 or email cbcrotty@chartermi.net.

Annual Big Bay Relay set to take off in May

MARQUETTE – The Big Bay Relay, sponsored by Johnsons Superior Shoes and Jimmy Johns is set to take off on May 18. The relay is now in its 37th year and will start at 8 a.m. and run from Marquette to Big Bay.

In the past, the race has brought in 50-plus teams comprised of elite runners to novices.

Divisions include: All female, all male and mixed team divisions, as well as a seven person junior division.

The Noquemanon Trail Network is hosting the road running race and is looking for volunteers as well as participants.

This year, the funds raised will go toward Noquemanon Skijor Club and Animoosh Skijor Race promotion.

MSP Negaunee to host open house Friday

NEGAUNEE – The Michigan State Police Negaunee Post, located at 180 E.S.-41 E, is holding an open house on April 19 from 4-7 p.m.

The community is invited to celebrate the Michigan State Police’s 96 years of service.

In addition to cake, coffee, and a tour of the post, visitors will be able to view the Marquette County Emergency Operations Center, Marquette County Central Dispatch (9-1-1) and the Negaunee Regional Communications Center. There will also be displays and canine demonstrations.

Representatives from the State Police Dive Team, Canine Division and Emergency Support Team will be present at the open house.

The Marquette County Search and Rescue Team, Dive Team, a canine handler and the extrication truck will also be at the event along with the American Red Cross.
