‘Spring’ spoils start of three MAS sports

MANISTIQUE – Spring sports are on hold at Manistique Area Schools. Officials announced Tuesday that delays in golf, track, and softball are due to inclement spring weather.

According to Manistique High School Athletic Director Rob Ryan, the current conditions, coupled with anticipated weather over the next week prompted the changes. Included in the delays are:

High school golf – Manistique’s home golf course, Indian Lake Golf and Country Club, will not open for at least 10-14 days, perhaps much longer. The home matches scheduled on April 16 and 17 are cancelled and will not be rescheduled until the course is opened.

High school track – Since half of the MAS track remains snow covered, the scheduled home meet set for April 20 will be moved to a later date to be announced. The Superior Dome meet in Marquette on April 16 will be attended as planned, as well as the meet on April 23 in Iron Mountain.

High school softball – Games scheduled on April 15, 17 and 18 have been postponed, since many of the fields in the U.P., including Manistique’s, are not ready. Since the games are conference games, they will be rescheduled once the fields are ready. The softball game scheduled for April 22 in Munising may be played, depending on conditions.

Junior high track – The start of junior high track has been delayed due to lack of available practice facilities. Both the high school track and softball teams are currently using the gym, leaving no space for the junior high team. The first meet, scheduled for April 24 in Escanaba, will be attended only if the team is able to practice before then.
