Local sixth grader places in state spelling bee


Melanie Jones Melanie Jones MANISTIQUE – St. Francis de Sales sixth grader Melanie Jones placed tenth in the Level One competition of the Knights of Columbus Michigan State Council Spelling Bee, held recently in Saginaw. Level One included fourth, fifth and sixth graders from all over Michigan. Some of the words the students spelled during the 3.5 hour-long competition included aestheticism, obstreperous, anachronism and neoconservatism.

To be eligible to compete in the Knights of Columbus State Spelling area students had to have placed in the Regional Knights of Columbus Spelling Bee held in December. Jones placed first in that competition.
