Nichols wins K of C State Free Throw Contest
Competitions for the annual Knights of Columbus Council Free Throw Championship for boys and girls ages 9-14, began on Feb. 18 at St. Francis de Sales gymnasium in Manistique.
Local council winners were: Lucas Weber, Jenna Jack, Jerry Jack, Kanton Lauzon, Madison Russell, Darian Nichols, Logan MacPhail, Alexis Russell and Sydnee MacPhail.
Winners advanced to District 37 competition held on Feb. 23 at St. Francis de Sales. Local council champions from Manistique, Munising and Naubinway area competed.
Winning in the boys division at district competition were: Hunter Dennis, 10, Engadine; Andrew Legault, 11, Engadine; Darion Nichols, 14, Manistique; Alec Blank, 12, Munising; Jourdan Humphrey, 13, Munising; Teletha Witty, 10, Munising and Jerry Jack, 10, Manistique.
Winning in the girls category were: Alexis Russell, 13, Manistique and Madison Russell, 14, Manistique.
Three district champions from Manistique competed on March 10 in the 2013 Marquette Diocesan and State Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championships.
Ten-year-old Jerry Jack won the diocesan championship in his age group by hitting 18 of 25 shots.
Darion Nichols, 14, hit 22 of 25 to tie another competitor. He won the diocesan regional championship which includes the whole Upper Peninsula on the second set of five tie breakers by hitting all five free throws.
Madison Russell narrowly missed the diocesan championship with 21 of her 25 shots to also tie another competitor. She later lost in the shoot off.
Jack and Nichols competed later in the afternoon for the state championship. Their scores were then called down to competitions held at Sacred Heart in downstate Mt. Pleasant, where competitors from Michigan’s six other diocese were competing.
When the results were announced, Nicholas again tied a competitor forcing yet another shoot off. He went on to seal the win for the state championship on his second set of five free throws.
