The UPSET drug presentation with Det. Lt. Tim Sholander will be held in the auditorium this Thursday, Feb. 28, beginning at 6 p.m. Please come and hear his very important message.
Manistique Emerald boys’ basketball enters district tournament play at the Bonifas gymnasium beginning at 7 p.m. against the Harbor Springs Rams on Monday, March 4. All tickets for this MHSAA event are five dollars. Winner plays at their home gym on Friday, March 8, against the winner of the Newberry and Inland Lakes (Indian River) game.
All juniors will take the Michigan Merit Exam (MME) March 5 – 7 in the gymnasium of Emerald Elementary. The MME is required of all juniors in the state of Michigan. The MME tests students in reading, writing, mathematics, social studies, science, and employment readiness. Important – Due to state rules, all testing must begin by 9 a.m. on all three days. Therefore, delayed start Wednesday does not apply to juniors during Michigan Merit Exams. On all three days of testing, juniors must report to Manistique middle/high school by 8:10 a.m. to board the bus to the testing site. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Middle school swim: grades five through eight - No Charge! Beginning Feb. 26 through March 28 on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30 – 4:45 p.m., swimming will be free. Swim coach Aldrich is looking for future swimmers to join the MHS swim team!
Manistique HOSA students’ regional competition: Students in the Delta Schoolcraft ISD-Manistique Satellite Health Occupation’s class competed in Health Occupations Students of America regional competitions on Feb. 8 at Bay College. The competition was among students from HOSA, region one and region nine, which include schools from across the entire Upper Peninsula. Manistique sent 34 students, and 32 qualified in the top 10 and can now advance on to state level competition.
Results include: First Place - Gold Medal: HOSA Bowl Team - Hunter Ashbrook, Jared Edwards, Maryse Hinkson, and Steph Zellar; Medical Reading - Ed Rethman; Medical Ethics and Law - Niki Walters. Second Place - Silver Medal: First Aid/ CPR Team - Robert Ayotte and Brandi Minor; Public Service Announcement Team - Carlie Chase, Jena Bosanic, Haley MacGregor, Elisa MacGregor, and Rachel Joslin; Nutrition - Kaitlyn Ziminski. Third Place - Bronze Medal: Veterinary Science - Adelle Gustafson; Nursing Assisting - Vanessa McNamara; Dental Terminology - Raeanne Robinson. Placing as finalist top 10: Medical Terminology Team - Jennifer Carlson, Samantha Sundling, Alicia Raredon, Elizabeth Thill, and Aletha Saez; CPR/First Aid Team - Tyler Kangas and Cameron Page; Sports Medicine - Ryan Ramey; HOSA Bowl Team - Joe Blanchard, Joey Dusseault, Breanna Bosanic, and Clay Weigel; Dental Terminology Team - Rachel Leckson and Chelsea Thompson; Growth and Development - Raiann Metty.
State competitions will be April 11 and 12 at the Grand Traverse Resort in Traverse City. For more information about HOSA or their competitions, you can contact health occupations instructor Kristen Demers at 341-4348.
Emerald Elementary is highlighted in the UP Environment Spring 2013 Newsletter. Emerald Physical Education Teacher, Chris Marana, was awarded one of the six environmental education grants that ties together natural resources, science concepts, and physical activity!
