Elks to host annual chili cook-off on March 9

MANISTIQUE – The Manistique Elks Lodge No. 632 will host the third annual chili cook-off on March 9. The money raised will benefit the Elks National Foundation.

The mission of the Elks National Foundation is to help Elks clubs build stronger communities.

Locally, the Elks National Foundation funds college scholarships for Manistique High School graduates, Bay Cliff Health Camp, the Schoolcraft County D.A.R.E program, the annual “Hoop Shoot” competition, veterans programs, and the Elks Community Investment Program.

The cook-off is open to the public. To compete, chili entries must be dropped off at the lodge between 4:30 and 5:30 p.m. on the day off the cook-off.

There is no charge to enter the competition. The fee for chili tasting is $5.

Judging will take place from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., followed immediately by “People’s Choice” voting.

Awards will be announced at 8 p.m., with prizes for first, second and third place, and “People’s Choice”.

The evening will also feature live entertainment starting at 7:30 p.m., a silent auction and 50/50 raffles.

Moose CBC Euchre, Chili Cook Off planned

MANISTIQUE – The Moose Lodge’s annual CBC Euchre and Chili Cook Off will take place on March 3.

Cards start at 2 p.m. and the chili cook off will follow at 4:30 p.m.

State retirees plan monthly meeting March 4

ESCANABA – The U.P. Chapter 16 of the State Employee Retirees Association will hold its monthly meeting on March 4 at 1:30 p.m. in the conference room of the state office building in Escanaba.

All members and their guests are encouraged to attend. Refreshments will be served.

CURTIS – Sue Vaniman will teach a basket weaving class on March 23, from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. at the Erickson Center in Curtis.

Students will complete a hearth basket in the class. The class fee is $40 and the registration deadline is March 9. Class size is limited, so register early by calling (906) 586-9974.

State retirees plan monthly meeting March 4

HERMANSVILLE – The 11th District of the American Legion, Department of Michigan held their mid-winter meeting. The meeting was held as part of the U.P. Association of American Legion Posts midwinter conference held at the Reino American Legion Post in Stambaugh on Jan. 19.

The next meeting of the 11th District will be held at the Rapid River Post on April 20 at 10:30 a.m.
