Emeralds send five to Individual Finals


Qualifying for the Michigan High School Athletic Associations Individual Finals in Roger City are Zach Lindemuth, Zavier Gonzalez, Cole Gonzalez, Mat Gonzalez and Cheyene Shaver Qualifying for the Michigan High School Athletic Associations Individual Finals in Roger City are Zach Lindemuth, Zavier Gonzalez, Cole Gonzalez, Mat Gonzalez and Cheyene Shaver MANISTIQUE – The Manistique Emerald Wrestling Team will send five wrestlers to the Michigan High School Athletic Associations Individual Finals in Roger City on Saturday.

Sitting on top of the list is Cole Gonzalez (36-2), who captured the 140-pound weight class with a win over Morgan Robins of Onaway in the championship round. Following a first round bye, Gonzalez beat Garret Reffruschinni of Munising, then eliminated Jack Ryan of Roger City for the right to advance to the championship.

Joining the 140-pound champion will be brothers Mat and Zavier. Mat (31-3) captured the number two spot in the 145-pound class. Mat beat Cooper Guidebeck of Ishpeming and Austin Bober from Roger City, but dropped a 6-3 decision to Trenton Doughty of Newberry in the title round.

Zavier (31-6) also captured second place for the Emeralds. His trip to the championship round came at the expense of Anthony Cartwright and Joe Kraue both of St. Ignace. Shane Aney of Rudyard defeated Zavier by a 4-3 decision in the championship.

Zach Lindemuth (20-6) filled a fourth place finish, sealing his trip to the finals with wins over Gwinn’s Taylor Redlon and Ishpeming’s Nathanial Meyers.

Cheyene Shaver (19-16) also made the cut with wins over Jorden Neuman of Norway and Eli Oswald of Bark River.
