District Spelling Bee winners advance


The first and second place winners in the annual District Spelling Bee will advance to regionals on Feb. 19. Courtesy photos MANISTIQUE – Eight students will be advancing to the 2013 Regional Spelling Bee after competing at the district event held in the Frederickson Auditorium Feb. 6.

A total of 25 students from Emerald Elementary, St. Francis de Sales School and Manistique Middle School competed after earning their way into the bee by being the top spellers in their grade levels.

The district results were:

Fourth Grade: First place, Emmalyn Braun; second place, Ava Fleck; third place, Kayla Muth; fourth place, Gunnar Collins; fifth place, River Brawley.

The first- and second-place winners from grades 5-8 now move on to the regional competition, which is being held at St. Francis De Sales School. The event is scheduled for Feb. 19.

The winners at regionals will advance to the U.P. Spelling Bee, where they will compete for the right to represent the Upper Peninsula at the national spelling bee in Washington, D.C.

Spelling bees in the U.P. are sponsored by the local school districts and the Upper Peninsula Community Education Association.
