Chronic pain workshops set

24 UPCAP volunteers complete training

ESCANABA – Twenty attendees completed a four-day Chronic Pain Self-Management training offered by UPCAP in January. These individuals are now able to facilitate Chronic Pain Self Management workshops in their respective Upper Peninsula communities. The program is one of Stanford University’s suite of Evidence-Based Self Management programs.

The Chronic Pain Self- Management program was designed specifically for persons experiencing chronic musculoskeletal pain (chronic neck, shoulder, and back pain, etc.), whiplash injuries, chronic regional pain syndromes, repetitive strain injury, chronic pelvic pain, post-surgical pain that lasts beyond 6 months, neuropathic pain or neuralgias, and post stroke or central pain. It may also be appropriate for those with persistent headaches, Crohn’s disease, irritable bowel syndrome, diabetic neuropathy, and severe muscular pain due to conditions such as multiple sclerosis. People who have taken the program have expressed having more vitality and energy, less pain, less dependence on others, improved mental health, more involvement in everyday activities, and are more satisfied with their lives compared to those who have not taken the program.

The chronic pain program is a sixweek workshop that meets for 2 1/2 hours each week. It is facilitated by two trained leasers who either live with or care for someone living with chronic pain. Session topics include relaxation techniques, nutrition, physical activity, goal setting, communication skills, and working with healthcare providers. Each participant also receives the Chronic Pain workbook and Moving Easy Program (exercise) CD. UPCAP believes this to be a valuable program for persons living in chronic pain, and will utilize these newly trained facilitators to begin offering this workshop across the Upper Peninsula.
