JV knocks off conference leading Modeltowners
MANISTIQUE – The Manistique Emerald junior varsity basketball team got a taste of what the Baltimore Ravens were feeling when they won the Super Bowl – knocking off the No. 1 ranked Gwinn Modeltowners at home Tuesday night.
Tied at 30, with the outcome still very much undecided, the Emeralds went to work, putting together a 7-1 run in the final minutes of the Mid- Peninsula Conference match-up.
With the game on the line, Allie Nagy converted 8-of-14 free throws in the stretch to seal the win; she finished with 15 points to lead the Emeralds in the win.
“I am so proud of this team,” Coach Bob Ryan said. “We’ve battled in so many close games against good teams this year and tonight they were rewarded for their efforts.”
In addition to Nagy, Holly Blowers scored eight points, Machaela Hinkson, Hailey Hoholik and Breiann Richey added four points each. Sydney Chartier scored two.
Blowers hauled in eight rebounds; Hinkson and Hoholik took down six each.
Last Friday in Iron Mountain, the Emeralds played another solid game but came up short losing to the Mountaineers 48-43.
Tied at 22 at the half, the Emeralds trailed 32-30 going into the fourth quarter. From there, Iron Mountain outscored Manistique 16-13 in the final frame to seal the win.
Nagy paced the Emeralds’ effort with 17 points, Hinkson eight, Blowers and Chartier had six points each. Sammie Williams four and Maddie Russel scored two.
On Monday, down by eight points at the end of three in St. Igance, the Emeralds couldn’t make up any ground in the final frame losing 46- 27 to their hosts.
