Gonzalez captures third consecutive Mid-Pen title

Not to be outdone, sophomore Cole Gonzalez also defended his conference title for the second year. NORWAY – The Manistique wrestling team traveled to Norway to participate in the 2013 Mid-Peninsula Conference championship Saturday. Just as he did as a sophomore and junior, Mat Gonzalez was crowned king of the 145-pound weight class when the mats were rolled up at the end of the day.

Gonzalez’s third Mid-Pen title came at the expense of Ishpeming’s Jordan Tausignant by technical fall.

Wrestling at 140-pounds, Cole Gonzalez likewise successfully defended his conference title with his win-by-decision over Johnathan Willey, also from Ishpeming.

Zavier Gonzalez and Robin Jenerou both battled to second place finishes.

Amber Smith, Dylan Stevenson and Cheyenne Shaver each finished in third place.

Austin Miller and Landon Burton rounded off the medal rounds with fourth place finishes.

The Norway Knights captured the 2013 Mid- Peninsula Conference team championship.

In front of a home crowd, the Knights dominated the event, capturing 176 points to win the title. Westwood came in second with 108 points, followed by Manistique with 98, Iron Mountain 83.5, Negaunee 79, Ishpeming 75 and Gwinn 57.

For the Emeralds, Cole and Mat Gonzalez medaled in the meet, finishing in first place in the 140 and 145-pound weight classes, respectively.
