Thomas H. Becks

Thomas H. Becks, 85, of 651 Garden Ave., Manistique, Mich., died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2013, at his home.

He was born Sept. 7, 1927, in Alma, Mich., the son of William and Blanche (Benton) Becks and attended school in Cheboygan, Mich.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy seeing duty in the Pacific Theatre.

On Feb. 11, 1949, he married the former Shirley M. Chase in Cheboygan. They made their home and raised their family in Munising, Mich., and moved to Manistique in the early 1990s.

In his earlier years, Tom was employed at Dow Chemical in Midland and as a Fuller Brush salesman. He was lastly employed as a pipe-fitter at the Kimberly-Clark Paper Mill in Munising until his retirement.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Manistique and Munising and the Schoolcraft County V.F.W. Post No. 4420 in Manistique. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and fishing, and was of Methodist faith.

On Sept. 22, 2011, he was fortunate to partake in the Upper Peninsula Honor Flight to Washington, DC.

Tom is survived by his wife, Shirley M. Becks of Manistique; daughters, Cheryl (Dale) Trombly of Iron Mountain, Mich., and Wendy (David) Braunsdorf of London, Ky.; son, Thomas H. Becks, Jr. of Manistique; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; brother, Fred (Fern) Becks of Cheboygan; sister, Reverend Dorothy Jean Chapman of South Carolina; along with nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, William, Howard, Harry, George, and Harold “Chick” Becks; and his sister, Alma Schroeder.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.
