News from MAS
Due to the inclement weather last week that resulted in school closure for two days, the following events will be rescheduled:
Winterfest Week – Cancelled for Jan. 28 – Feb. 1. A new week to be determined.
Financial Aid Night – Rescheduled for Feb. 14 from 6 – 7 p.m. in the community room. The purpose of this presentation is to explain and discuss the process of applying for financial aid, and how it is determined when your son/daughter applies to colleges and universities. We will also discuss some important websites and scholarships available to your son or daughter.
Jan. 31: Det. Lt. Sholander, UPSET, will present a drug awareness program to the community from 6 – 7 p.m. in the High School Auditorium.
Jan. 31: MAS School Board “Goals Setting Workshop” in the community room of the middle/ high school beginning at 6:45 p.m.
Two Saturday sessions remain during the month of February when students can come to the high school to take practice tests to review for the ACT. The Saturday dates are: Feb. 9 and 23 from 9 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.
Manistique High School staff strongly encourages our juniors to take advantage of these free, online practice tests to prepare for the Michigan Merit Exam in March. Students can go to www.actstudent.org and click on “Test Prep” at the top. Then click on “Practice Test Questions” on the left. If students do not have access to a computer, or cannot make one of the Saturday sessions, they are encouraged to pick up a paper copy of the ACT prep guide from Mr. Rochon in the Guidance Office.
All juniors will take the Michigan Merit Exam March 5 – 7 in the gym at Emerald Elementary. The MME is required of all juniors in the state of Michigan. The MME tests students in reading, writing, mathematics, social studies, science, and employment readiness. Another important aspect of the MME is that it incorporates the national ACT test. The ACT test is required for all students who plan on entering a college or university. The state of Michigan pays for all juniors to take the ACT which is a savings of $48 per student. Important: state mandate requires all testing to begin by 9 a.m., therefore, delayed start Wednesday on March 6 does not apply to juniors during the MME. On all three days of testing, juniors must report to Manistique Middle/High School by 8:10 a.m. to board the bus to the testing site.
February 6 – 8: Students in the Arts – From 6 – 9 p.m., Manistique School and Public Library, along with the Manistique Middle School Drama will present their annual “Students in the Arts”. Student art works will be on display in the library; the drama performance will take place in the auditorium each evening. Come one night, two nights, or all three nights to enjoy the talents of Manistique students.
Thank You to the Community In Action volunteers for organizing the “Night Out at the Library” event. The night was a huge success, fantastic stories were read, and the famous igloo can be seen in our library.
The Family Challenge has returned to Emerald Elementary for the month of February with two challenge events: 1 – Snowshoeing at the Manistique Township Environmental Lab on Feb. 2. Event location, time, information and challenge form will be sent home with each child prior to the event. 2 – Participate in the “Walk for Warmth” on Feb. 23 as a family. Registration will take place from 8 a.m. – 9 a.m. at the Manistique Senior Center with a short symbolic walk to follow. A challenge form will be sent home with each child prior to the event.
Family Game Board Night is scheduled from 6 – 7:30 p.m. at Emerald Elementary on Feb. 12. There will be games for you and your child to ‘try out’. When the event concludes, participants will have the chance to win some board games to take home and enjoy.
Mark your calendars now so you don’t schedule anything else on March 7. At the high school auditorium, it’s the second and third grade music program, “BUGZ!” Taking the stage will be lady bugs, fireflies, butterflies, army ants, love bugs, houseflies, a praying mantis, some beetles, assorted other creepy crawlies! Be sure to invite family and friends.
