JV beat Norway, drop tough loss to Gwinn

MANISTIQUE – The Manistique JV girls’ basketball team put together four solid quarters at home last Thursday and defeated the Norway Knights 44-34.

After trailing 11-10 after one quarter, the Emeralds outscored the Knights 11-5 in the second quarter and led 21-16 at halftime.

They outscored Norway 23-18 in the second half to secure the victory.

Allie Nagy led a balanced scoring attack with 14 points. Sammie Williams and Machaela Hinkson each scored seven, Hailey Hoholik added six, Holly Blowers five, Sydney Chartier three, and Maddie Russell two points..

Hinkson led all rebounders with nine and Hoholik and Williams grabbed six boards each.

At Gwinn Monday, the girls battled right until the final buzzer, but lost to the Modeltowners 49-47.

The Emeralds trailed 33-23 at halftime, but outscored Gwinn 24-16 in the second half. The JV rallied to tie the score at 45-45, but the Modeltowners hit two key baskets to the Emeralds’ one and eventually pulled out the victory.

Nagy led the Emeralds with 13 points, Blowers scored nine, Chartier and Williams eight each, Hoholik, Rachel Ryan, Russell and Breiann Richey had two points each and Hinkson one. Hinkson led the rebounding effort with eight.

“The girls played well in both game,” said Coach Bob Ryan. “It’s too bad we came up short against Gwinn, but they can be proud of their effort.”
