MANISTIQUE – The Schoolcraft County Snowmobile Association recently announced Trail 2 West is now officially reopened and groomed. The trail section had been closed for two years following the private landowner’s termination of permission to use the property as trail.

In an effort to reopen the trail section, the SCSA: scouted a reroute, obtained new landowner permissions, drafted a trail proposal for state approval, secured funding for the implementation of the trail relocation, secured and supervised contractors to build the new tail, and signed the new portion using the stateapproved motorized trail signing handbook.

Previously, snowmobilers were forced to take a temporary reroute that included a 59-mile bypass around Indian Lake. According to the SCSA, this diverted most snowmobile traffic from entering Manistique and possibly patronizing area businesses.

The efforts to reopen the trail were funded with nearly $33,000 from the Snowmobile Trail program, a user-funded program. The SCSA spent approximately 500 volunteer hours to reopen the 8-mile section and is encouraging snowmobile traffic to respect private property as they enter and exit the city and to pay attention to trail signage.
