Residents offered foreclosure loan

MANISTIQUE – A no-interest loan program from the Michigan Homeowner Assistance Nonprofit Housing Corporation, acting through Michigan State Housing Development Authority is now available in Schoolcraft County.

The program, “Helping Michigan’s Hardest-Hit”, has received over $204 million in Emergency Economic Stabilization Act or Troubled Asset Relief Program funds to distribute throughout Michigan.

In addition to delinquent property tax aid, homeowners may be eligible for assistance with delinquent mortgages with the intent to prevent foreclosures.

Funds are available on a firstcome, first-serve basis statewide. The assistance is a one-time award of up to $30,000 per household. MHA will determine eligibility, which is available to households who have a qualifying, involuntary hardship resulting in mortgage or property tax delinquencies. The homeowner must also currently occupy the property as his/her primary residence.

Applications are currently available online at www.stepforwardmichigan.org or call (866) 946-7432.

Although residents cannot apply locally, informational packets are available in the County Treasurer’s office, located at 300 Walnut Street, Room 169.
