Manistique Glee Club seeks votes, looks to sing with ‘Foreigner’

MANISTIQUE – The Manistique Middle/High School Glee Club is competing for an opportunity to perform on stage with music group “Foreigner”. Voting will take place now until Jan. 27 and residents may vote as many times as they wish.

Two area schools will be selected from the winning number of votes, with one school performing on Feb. 1 and one on Feb. 2.

Each winning school will receive $500 for their music department. To vote, visit www.wglqradio.com, scroll down the page and click on “Sing on Stage with Foreigner” banner.

UPSET to present to community, MHS students on Jan. 31

MANISTIQUE – A presentation from USPET (Upper Peninsula Substance Enforcement Team) will be held on Jan. 31 at the Manistique Middle/High School. Det. Lt. Tim Scholander will provide parents and community members with up-to-date information on the current war on drugs in the U.P., as well as UPSET’s role in this effort.

The presentation will be given to middle and high school students throughout the day, with the community meeting taking place at 6 p.m. in the MHS auditorium.

Annual Indian Lake fishing derby to take place this weekend

MANISTIQUE – The 27th annual Ice Fishing Derby will be held Jan. 26-27 on Indian Lake. The fee to register is $5, with a registration deadline set for 9 a.m. Saturday.

The derby pays out 80 percent of the fees collected, with five cash prizes in two categories: longest walleye and longest perch.

A kid’s category will be free and open to children 12 and under. Trophies will be awarded for first through third places for perch. Tickets are available at Top O’ Lake Sport Shop.

MAS board set date for annual “Goals-setting Workshop”

MANISTIQUE – The Manistique Area Schools Board of Education will hold their annual “Goalssetting Workshop” on Jan. 31. The workshop will take place in the community room of the Manistique Middle/High School at 6:45 p.m.

The public is invited to attend the workshop, which will outline the goals for the district in the future.
