JV girls drop one, come back with win

Joe LeBlanc photo MANISTIQUE – The Manistique Emerald girls’ junior varsity basketball team put forth a great effort against the Gladstone braves Friday, but fell short in the end, losing 46-40.

Manistique jumped out to a 13-9 first quarter lead and continued to lead 21-19 at the half. The third quarter proved to be the JV’s downfall, as the Braves out-scored the Emeralds 14-6 to take a 33-27 lead into the fourth quarter.

Both teams netted 13 in the final eight minutes of play, with Gladstone securing the win.

Allie Nagy, with 11 points, and Holly Blowers, with 9, led the Emeralds in scoring. Machaela Hinkson and Sammie Williams each scored five, Hailey Hoholik scored four, Maddie Russell and Breiann Richey finished with two points each, and Rachel Ryan and Sydney Chartier netted one point each.

Williams led all rebounding with nine boards.

Tuesday night at home the JV girls got back on the winning track with a 50-37 win over the Munising Mustangs.

The Mustangs got off to a fast start and led 16-13 after one quarter of play. They continued this lead with 23-21 at the half.

Trailing throughout the game, the Emeralds shined in the third, netting 17 points while shutting down the Mustangs. They held their opponent to just four points in the stretch.

Up by 11 points (38-27), the Emeralds outscored Munising 12-10 to seal the win.

Nagy again led the Emeralds in scoring with an impressive 22-point effort. Bowers added eight points, Chartier six, Russell five, Hinkson four, Richey three and Olivia Holmberg shot two.
