January blood drive set for Manistique

MANISTIQUE – The first 2013 U.P. Regional Blood Drive will be held on Jan. 9 from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Blanchard Center, 401 Deer St., in Manistique.

Amity group to host annual fundraiser

MANISTIQUE – The Manistique Amity Group will hold its annual “White Elephant Fundraiser Sale” on Jan. 9 at 9:30 a.m. at the Presbyterian Church on Main St. in Manistique.

Attendees are asked to bring two gift-wrapped, clean, slightlyused items for the sale. Members may bring a guest. For more information, call 341-6840.

Women’s Club plans fashion show meeting

MANISTIQUE – The January meeting of the GFWC Manistique Women’s Club will feature a fashion show. The show, with fashion from the Peoples Store and St. Vincent de Paul Store, will take place on Jan. 8 at noon in the Comfort Inn.

The fashion show is intended to demonstrate how to create fresh, new looks for all ages and sizes. A short business meeting is planned.

Tickets for the luncheon are $10 and available at the Peoples Store until noon on Jan. 7. Attendees must present tickets at the luncheon and no reservations or ticket sales will be accepted after the deadline.

Monthly pasty sale takes place Jan. 9-10

MANISTIQUE – The women of Manistique First United Methodist Church will hold a monthly pasty sale on Jan. 9 and 10. The church is located at 190 N. Cedar St.

U.P. state employee retiree meeting set

ESCANABA - The Upper Peninsula Chapter No. 16 of the State Employee Retirees Association will hold its monthly meeting on Monday, Jan. 7, at 1:30 p.m. The meeting will be held in the conference room of the state office building in Escanaba.

All members and their guests are encouraged to attend.

Local MRSP meeting to be held on Jan. 9

MANISTIQUE – The January meeting for the Michigan Retired School Personnel will be held at the Zion Lutheran Church on Oak St. at 11:30 a.m. on Jan. 9.

The program will be “Identify Theft and Scams” will feature Schoolcraft County Sheriff Grant Harris.

Gladstone player wins ‘Fantasy 5’ jackpot

LANSING – Following the 2010 Mega Millions jackpot win in Gladstone, a Fantasy 5 player matched all five numbers in the Dec. 15 drawing, winning $100,000.

The winning ticket, an easypick, was purchased at Gladstone Super Valu, Inc., located at 409 N. 9th St. in Gladstone.

Semi-truck destroyed in fire while on U.S. 2

RAPID RIVER – A semi-truck was destroyed by fire Wednesday just south of Raid River. The driver of the vehicle was not injured in the blaze.

According to a press release from the Michigan State Police – Gladstone post, troopers responded to a report of a truck fire on U.S. 2 at approximately 5:40 a.m. Upon arriving at the scene, troopers noted the truck had been fully engulfed in flames.

The driver, Robert Lustila, 56, from Germfask, reported having heard a loud bang while driving. After pulling onto the shoulder of the highway and exiting his truck, Lustila said he saw four foot flames coming out of the chimney stack of the truck as well as from under the hood. While unable to re-enter the truck for a fire extinguisher, Lustila was not injured during the incident.

The semi-truck, owned by WJZ and Sons Harvesting of Germfask, is considered a total loss. The load of logs on the truck was later transferred to another semi-truck summoned to the scene.

According to the release, U.S. 2 was shut down for approximately three hours and traffic was rerouted down Bayshore Drive. A load of salt was applied at the scene, due to the frozen water and foam used to extinguish the fire.

Masonville Township Fire Department, Brampton Township Fire Department, Delta County Road Commission, Delta County Sheriff’s Department and Gladstone Public Safety assisted on the scene.

Erickson Center plans ‘movie nights’ in 2013

CURTIS – The Erickson Center for the Arts will hold three “Movie Nights” in 2013.

The first movie, “True Grit”, will be shown at the center on Jan. 11 at 7 p.m. The 2010 version the movie stars Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, Josh Brolin and Hailee Steinfeld and is rated PG-13.

Other Movie Nights will be held on: Feb. 8, featuring “The King’s Speech”; and April 12, featuring “Toy Story 3”.

Refreshments will be available.

‘Lifesaver weekend’ ends with 4 fatalities

LANSING – Four people lost their lives in four separate traffic crashes during the 2012 “Lifesaver holiday weekend”, according to the Michigan State Police. In comparison, eight people died in eight separate traffic crashes during the same weekend in 2011.

The 2012 Lifesaver holiday weekend ran from 6 p.m. on Dec. 21, through midnight on Dec. 23.

Alcohol was a known factor in three of the four fatal crashes.
