James R. Hatfield
James R. Hatfield, 80, of 4771W Michibay Drive Manistique, Mich., passed away on Sunday, Dec. 23, 2012, at Marquette General Hospital.
Jim was born Aug. 30, 1932, the son of the late Forest C. and Florence (Cooper) Hatfield. On Aug. 3, 1957, Jim married the former Dorene Erica Schroeder at the Outerdrive Faith Lutheran Church in Detroit, Mich.
Jim served his country in the United States Army, in the Transportation Corp. He attended Wayne State University, where he obtained his masters degree in education. Jim was a junior high band instructor in the Mt. Clemens and Roseville Public Schools, retiring after 36 years. Jim was a charter and active member of Redemption Lutheran Church in Sterling Heights, Mich. He conducted the Tahquamenon Strings in Newberry, Mich., and together with his wife, Dorene, established the Manistique Community Orchestra, which he conducted. Jim was a server and loved his Lord. He was also a foster parent for many years. Jim enjoyed traveling, wood carving preferably with drift wood, camping, cross country skiing, kayaking, gardening and just being outdoors. But above all, Jim loved his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Jim is survived by his wife of 52 years, Dorene Hatfield of Manistique; sons, Daniel Hatfield of Warren, Mich., Wayne Hatfield of Pass Christian, Miss., Mark Hatfield of Lake Orian, Mich., and Matthew (Cindy) Hatfield of Sterling Heights.
In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his daughter, Janine Laurie Hatfield and brother, Charles William Hatfield.
Visitation was Wednesday, Dec. 26, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Grace Lutheran Church in Germfask, Mich. A memorial service followed at 1 p.m., in the church, with Pastor Arthur Bode officiating.
