Tragedy strikes at FutureMark Mill

MANISTIQUE – A tragedy struck FutureMark – Manistique in May, only one month after the mill was saved from threats of closure from bankruptcy. The tragic forklift accident, involving employee Debbie L. Carlson, 53, of Manistique saddened mill officials and employees, as well as the community.

At approximately 1:28 a.m. on May 30, Manistique Public Safety officers responded to a report of a forklift accident at the mill, located at 453 South Mackinac St. Upon arriving on the scene, officers determined that Carlson had sustained fatal injuries.

An on-scene investigation conducted by officers concluded that Carlson had been operating the forklift to move paper bales in the outside storage area of the mill. During this process, the forklift rolled on its side, subsequently falling on top of Carlson and killing her instantaneously, according to a press release issued at the time.

In addition to an investigation by public safety, the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration also conducted a separate investigation.

Carlson was employed at Manistique Papers for 32 years.
