Wrestlers improve to 7-0

‘Bridge Brawl’ leaves Emeralds with 5 wins

MANISTIQUE – Off to an impressive start, the Manistique wrestling team improved to 7-0 following a trip east to take part in the annual Rudyard “Bridge Brawl”.

Going into the event 2-0, the Emeralds kept the streak going, defeating five teams from below the bridge in the brawl.

“Most teams we faced were missing weight classes, but we must take advantage of those when we can,” said Assistant Coach Bill Bowman. “The kids responded well and some of the young wrestlers came up with big victories.”

Manistique started out with a 48-22 win over Boyne City. They followed up with wins over Traverse City Central and Mancelona by the same score. The team defeated Charlevoix 51-24, then exiting the tournament with a 54-9 win over Cheboygan.

Undefeated for the Emeralds were: Jake Milavec, wrestling at 125 pounds; Cole Gonzalez, at 135-140; Matt Gonzalez at 152; Zavier Gonzalez at 160; and Cheyene Shaver at 189-215.

Wrestlers with just one loss were: Landon Burton, wrestling at 285; Dillon Stevenson at 135-140; Joe Miller at 130. Weighing in at 156, Zack Lindemuth went 3-1 on the day, wrestling at 171 pounds.

Robin Jenerou, Dakota Mogg and Dalton Carl recorded their first win of the season on the trip.

Coach Gary Bowman will look to keep the team’s winning streak intact when they travel to Menominee to take part in the Menominee “Super Duals” Dec. 29.

In last week’s issue, two wrestlers’ wins were mistakenly excluded from the story. Jake Milavek placed second, and Zach Lindemuth fourth at St. Ignace Lions Club Invitational.
