Wildcats take two, lose two on the road
HOUGHTON – The Manistique Wildcats U-19 girl’s hockey team hit the road for games against Iron River and Houghton last weekend. The road trip got off to a blazing start with a pair of wins against the Ice Hawks in Iron River.
In game one, the Walters sisters Cassie and Sammy combined for three goals in the first period, two by Cassie and one by Sammy.
Up by three, Hanna Hinkson slapped in two, Sammy Walters and Darby Demers contributed one each to push the Cat’s lead to seven at the end of the second period.
Shelby Misniakiewicz added one goal and C. Walters’s two more in the third giving Manistique a 10-0 victory.
First-year goalie Hailey Mac- Gregor was in the net for the Wildcats.
Game two produced some of the same results for Manistique. The Cat’s took game two 8-0, scoring four goals in the first and second periods.
Demers got her second goal of the day early in the first, followed by a goal by Hinkson and two by H. Bryant.
Allison Casey, Emma Bryant, C. Walters and H. Bryant each scored once in the second period.
“I was very impressed with the progress we have made early in the season,” Coach Doug Casey said. “We are small in numbers, have a couple of new faces and have a first year goalie, so we just didn’t know what to expect. That said, we also have two of the best defensemen in the league in Darby and Hanna. They all skated hard and played very well.”
The trip to Houghton produced different results with Manistique dropping a pair 3-2 and 5-2 to Al- Telcom.
Trailing by two late in the third period, Demers hit the back of the net with a shot from the blue line. Less than a minute later, C. Walters caught a pass from Megan Annelin to cut the lead to one.
Play in the net by MacGregor kept Manistique in the game, but the team just couldn’t get the puck to fall.
Manistique jumped out front early in game two off a goal by C. Walters, but then gave up five unanswered goals to Al-Telcom.
Trailing 5-1 Megan Annelin found the back of the net for the game’s final goal late in the period.
“It was a nice road trip,” said Casey. “By the end I think everyone on the team scored, and everyone contributed. For a first year goalie Hailey played very well, Cassie returning to the ice this season has definitely produced results with six goals.”
Manistique 3-2-1 is sponsored by Pizza Hut of Manistique.
The Wildcats will head to Alpena on Friday for the Wooden Nickel Tournament.
