JV girls off to fast start
MANISTIQUE – The Manistique Emeralds’ junior varsity girls’ basketball team has started the season with three wins and one loss.
The JV opened the season at Munising with a 39-29 win. A balanced scoring attack was led by Allie Nagy with 10 points and Harley Hoholik with nine. Machaela Hinkson scored six, Holly Blowers, Sydney Chartier and Maddie Russell each had four and Breianna Richey chipped in two.
In the only home game of the young season, the JV squad lost to the Negaunee Miners 40-32. The Emeralds trailed early 21-7, but made a strong comeback in the third quarter to cut the lead to five, (24-19).
The Miners rallied in the fourth quarter to grab the victory. Chartier led the Emeralds’ scoring with nine points. Blowers added six, Nagy and Richey each had five, Brittany Zellar added four, and Hoholik three.
At Norway, the Emeralds pulled out a hard fought 40-33 victory. Manistique outscored the Knights 22-16 in the first half and 18-17 in the second half. Nagy, with 13 points and Blowers with 12, paced the Emeralds in scoring. Chartier added seven, Richey four, Hoholik two and Hinkson and Zellar one each.
At Rudyard on Monday, the JV girls started slowly and trailed 5-4 after one quarter. From that point on, the team used full court pressure and an outstanding defensive effort to get a 41-18 victory.
The Emeralds out scored Rudyard 10-4 in the second quarter and 27-9 in the second half.
Nagy and Zellar each scored nine points to lead a balanced scoring attack. Chartier scored six, Blowers four, Hinkson and Rachel Ryan three, Hoholik and Sammie Williams three and Russell two.
Williams led the rebounding effort with nine.
“It’s been a nice start to the season especially winning three games on the road,” said Coach Bob Ryan. “The girls have worked hard, played hard and got three well deserved wins.”
