Former resident to be ordained

Deacon Marty Flynn Deacon Marty Flynn MANISTIQUE – Bishop Alexander K. Sample of the Diocese of Marquette will ordain Marty Flynn to the priesthood on Dec. 14, at 3:30 p.m. in St. Peter Cathedral in Marquette.

Flynn was ordained as a transitional deacon in December 2011.

“Becoming a priest never crossed my mind until I was 31,” Deacon Marty said. “I didn’t have a solid relationship with Christ until later in life. You need that in order to hear that small voice. And then I fought it for nine years.”

Flynn was born in Marshall, Mich., the son of Bob and Ellen Flynn. His family moved to Gulliver when he was four years old. Marty attended St. Francis de Sales School in Manistique through eighth grade. He attended Manistique High School through his junior year, and graduated from Bay de Noc High School.

Five years after entering Sacred Heart

School of Theology in Hales Corners, Wis., Marty was ordained a transitional deacon.

After Deacon Marty is ordained a priest, he will celebrate his first Mass on Dec. 15, at 5:30 p.m. in St. Francis de Sales Parish in Manistique. Bishop Sample will then appoint him to serve as an associate pastor of a parish in the Diocese of Marquette.
