Pioneer Tribune photo MANISTIQUE – Approximately 250 bales of paper were destroyed, but no injuries were reported in a fire at FutureMark Manistique on Nov. 29. The cause of the fire remains undetermined.

According to a press release from Manistique Public Safety, officers and volunteer firefighters responded to a report of a fire at approximately 8:14 p.m. The fire was located outside of the mill, at 453 Mackinac St., in a large storage pile of paper bales adjacent to the southwest corner of the building.

Upon arriving at the scene, officers found mill employees attempting to extinguish the blaze. Officers and employees were able to contain the fire with approximately 75,000 gallons of water, preventing damage to the facility.

The scene of the fire wasn’t cleared until 4:30 a.m., with 21 degree weather and the time consuming process of tearing down the paper bales to extinguish completely hampering firefighters’ efforts.

Mill operations were uninterrupted and at no time during the fire were operations compromised. No injuries were reported, but the cause of the fire remains undetermined.
