Area woman killed while exiting driveway

NEWBERRY – A Newberry woman was killed Monday while exiting a private driveway.

According to the Luce County Sheriff’s Department, the accident occurred at approximately 8 a.m. Venessa Hoig, 56, had pulled into the path of another oncoming vehicle. The driver of the other vehicle, Harvey Giddens, Jr., also of Newberry, was unable to avoid the collision.

Hoig was transported to Helen Newberry Joy Hospital and later pronounced dead. Giddens sought medical treatment and was later released by the hospital.

Responders from the Luce County Ambulance Corp., the Newberry Fire Department, Luce County Sheriff’s Department and the Michigan State Police assisted at the scene.

The accident remains under investigation by the Luce County Sheriff’s Department.

EDC plans workshop

MANISTIQUE – The MISBTDC has partnered with the Schoolcraft County EDC and Michigan Works to provide free and confidential small business counseling to persons who are interested in starting or expanding a business.

Santa Lucia Fest set

MANISTIQUE – The Zion Lutheran

Church will hold the annual Santa Lucia Festival at 7 p.m. on Dec. 2.

Zion was started by Scandinavian immigrants who brought their faith to America. Parishioners and guests have celebrated this festive event in Manistique for almost 60 years as the way to welcome the Advent season and the change from darkness to light.

Santa Lucia is portrayed by a young girl who is honored for her service to the church. Following the crowning of the 2012 Santa Lucia, she will make a traditional walk wearing the wreath of lighted candles and carry a tray of coffee and rolls.

A short play entitled “Lighten Up” will be presented. Following the program, the public is invited to Augustana Hall for refreshments.
