Evelyn V. Ekdahl
Evelyn V. Ekdahl, 85, of Marshall, Mich., died at home on Sunday, Sept. 23, 2012, in the loving care of her family.
Evelyn was born in Marshall on March 15, 1927, to James and Jennie (Quinn) Coleman. She attended Marshall High School with the graduating class of 1945. After she raised her family she returned to Marshall Public Schools and earned her high school diploma through their adult education program.
She met her husband Glen while he was stationed with the U.S. Army at Fort Custer in Battle Creek, Mich. They were married on Oct. 6, 1944, in Manistique, Mich., at the Zion Lutheran Church. Glen and Evelyn continued to have strong ties to the city of Manistique, where Glen was born and raised, his parents lived until their deaths and daughter Judy was born.
Evelyn worked at Hemmingsen’s Texall Drugs and also Hitchen’s Drug Store when she was young. After having her own children, she would take care of children at the Ekdahl home. She worked with Rosie Nash as a seamstress at The Fabric House in Marshall. She also worked at Progressive Dynamics.
She loved bowling and for years bowled on Marshall Women’s Major
Bowling League where she made many life long friends. She continued to watch the bowling that she loved on television, never missing the opportunity to do so.
Evelyn also enjoyed playing cards, crocheting, sewing and gardening. She was also an avid reader. She assisted her husband Glen in his landscape business where she was the bookkeeper.
She will always be remembered by family as a strong, loving wife, mother and grandmother.
Surviving are her husband, Glen; son, Jerry (Cynthia) Ekdahl of Battle Creek; daughter, Judy (Ron) Borowitz of Marshall; grandchildren, Jill (Clyde) Lampkin of Albion, Mich., James Ekdahl, Cori Harris, Brittany (Hachem Hosenbux) Ekdahl of Chicago, Ill.; greatgrandchildren, Brittany (Ron) Gobson of Battle Creek, Keegan Yost, Corrina (Greg) Walker; one great-great-granddaughter, Lylah Lou Walker; niece, Micky (Dave) BandenHeede of Marshall; and many other nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers; six sisters; her son, Howard A. Ekdahl; grandson, Jeffrey A. Ekdahl and a great-great grandson Isaiah Plaat.
Funeral services were held at Craig Kempf Funeral Home in Marshall, on Friday, Sept. 28.
