MANISTIQUE – The Lady Emerald Volleyball team wrapped up their regular season with a sweep over the Big Bay De Noc Black Bears last Thursday night, winning 25-6, 25-13 and 25-12.

The Emeralds carried that momentum over to the first round of their districts, beating Gwinn 3-1 for the right to advance to the MHSSA District Finals tonight (Thursday) against the Stephenson Eagles. The Eagles advanced after defeating Newberry.

An intense battle led to a 25-19 win in set one Tuesday, but Gwinn rebounded taking set two 25-19.

Following the loss, coach Amy Nixon said her team regained their focus, then went on to take the next two sets 25-22 and 25-19.

“I’m and proud of the team and their focus, hard work and attitude last night,” said Nixon. “Set one we came out strong and led the entire set. Set two we let up a little and it costs us the set, but we fired back with some aggressive play at the net. Set four we got down early, called a time out and rallied back to win.”
