Darlene J. Welch Darlene J. Welch Darlene J. Welch, 71, of 409 Alger Ave., Manistique, Mich., died Saturday, Oct. 20, 2012, at her home in Manistique following a brief illness with cancer.

She was born Nov. 13, 1940, in Manistique the daughter of Alger and Elvira (Rice) Smith and attended Manistique area schools. She was a graduate of Manistique High School.

On Jan. 14, 1961 the former Darlene Smith married Walter Welch at St. Francis de Sales Church in Manistique. They made their home and raised their family in Manistique. Walter preceded her in death on Feb. 15, 2011.

Over the years, Darlene was employed by the Manistique Senior Center and at Maytag Furniture Store in Manistique on occasion. Darlene also helped her husband Walter in his business of building fish decoys, both in labor and sales.

Darlene was a member of St. Francis de Sales Church in Manistique, and formerly Manistique Moose Lodge and Schoolcraft County V.F.W. Auxiliary. She enjoyed bowling, playing horseshoes, hunting, fishing and trapping. She also cooked for many occasions, made wedding cakes and was an accomplished seamstress.

Proud of family, she and Walter were great supporters of their grandchildren’s extra-curricular activities, attending events whenever they could.

Darlene is survived by her daughters, Robin (Jim) Barker of Germfask, Mich., Patti (Shannon) Segerstrom of St. Jacques, Mich., and Joyce (Rollie) Lambert of Manistique; grandchildren, Melanie Barker of Tempe, Ariz., Jimmy Barker of Germfask, Shelby Segerstrom of Marquette, Mich., Paul Segerstrom of St. Jacques, Derek Lambert of Manistique and Zack Lambert of Manistique; mother, Elvira Sebright of Manistique; brothers, Howard (Carol) Smith of Manistique and Jerry (Nora) Smith of Gladstone, Mich.; sister, Cheryl (Bob Overland) Goudreau of Manistique; step-sister, Sandy (George) Smith of Farwell, Mich.; step-brothers, David (Rose) Sebright, Brent (Sue) Sebright and Stuart (Theresa) Sebright all of Hopkins, Mich.; along with several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her father and husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, Dale Smith.

Visitation was held from 4-7 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 23, at Messier- Broullire Funeral Home in Manistique. A closing prayer service led by her friend Reverend Al Valentine was held at 7 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 11:30 am, Wednesday, Oct. 24, at St. Francis de Sales Church in Manistique with Father Glenn Theoret officiating. Burial followed in Fairview Cemetery at Manistique.
