Police warn of solicitors

Door-to-door scam reported by residents

MANISTIQUE – The Manistique Public Safety Department is reminding residents to be wary of door-to-door salespeople or solicitors not holding a permit. Recent reports regarding potential scams prompted the warning.

According to a press release from the department, reports of strangers going door to door in the Lake Street area were received on Sept. 27. The solicitors in question allegedly attempted to sell a service from “Just Energy Company” and also claimed to be associated with Semco Gas Company.

The release states this information was false and reminds residents to be aware that any door to door salespersons or solicitors are required to obtain a permit from city hall or public safety. No permits have been issued to any out of town salesmen this year.

Any solicitors or salesmen should be reported immediately by calling 9-1-1, the release warns. Officers note soliciting without a permit is a misdemeanor criminal offense and suspects will be cited immediately.
