Emeralds dominate Mustangs
The Emeralds defense corralled the Mustangs holding them to just 142-yards in the win. While the Emerald D dominated, the young Mustang squad could not contain the Emerald senior who crossed the goal line five times while rushing for 133-yards in the win.
Broullire did not waste any time putting his brand on the victory. He scored on the Emeralds first possession of the night on a 20- yard run to the end zone.
Big plays from special teams had played a key role in the Emeralds success this season and Friday night was no different. Tied at six points, Tony Floyd broke free on a 91-yard kick return; the two point conversion failed giving the Emeralds a 12-6 lead going into the second quarter in Munising.
Manistique increased their lead to 19-6 when Broullire capped a two-play drive that took just 35 seconds with a 14-yard TD run. From their Manistique went to the air covered 65-yards and finished the scoring drive with a threeyard score by KB.
The Emerald had success in the bowl throwing the ball. Tyler Kangas finished the night 6-of- 10 for 117-yards.Zack Lambert hauled in two passes for 43 yards, Zach Lindemuth two for 22, Max Nelson one for 50 yards.
Manistique took advantage of a Mustang turnover deep in their own territory late in the second. The Mustangs missed handled the snap, the ball was recovered by the Emeralds on the eight-yard line; one play later Broullire took it in to give Manistique a 33-6 half time lead. Picking up where he left off in the first half, Broullire broke free on a 43-yard run for a score early in the third pushing the Emerald lead to 40-6.
“There opening drive was decent, they came down and scored, we kind of helped them out on their second, but settled down after and played very well on defense the rest of the night,” Coach Todd Kangas said.
While the defense dominated, Kangas said field position played a role in the victory.
“We ended up with a couple of short fields from returns, Tony took a kickoff back. The kids are coming around; they are showing progress each week,” Kangas added.
